SPPH’s Public Health Practice team faciliates community-based and experiential learning opportunities and collaborations between our students, faculty, staff, and partners at the local, state, national, and global levels. We seek to provide opportunities that lead to the application of public health knowledge and skills in real world settings to make a meaningful impact and improve health outcomes.

Student Opportunities

AHEC Scholars Program

The Texas Area Health Education Center (AHEC) East offers its Scholars Program to current health professions students who are interested in working with rural areas and/or with underserved communities. Students receive a stipend when the necessary didactic and experiential learning requirements are completed.

Albert Schweitzer Fellowship

The Albert Schweitzer Fellowship Houston-Galveston (ASFHG) is a one-year opportunity for health professions students to engage in a community-based service-learning project with a community partner.

Workforce Development

Texas AHEC East

UTMB is home to the Texas Area Health Education Center (AHEC) East, a HRSA-funded program that improves the supply, distribution, retention, and training of health professionals in medically underserved and rural areas in 100 counties in East Texas through eight regional centers.

South Central AIDS Education & Training Center (AETC)

The South Central AETC provides comprehensive training opportunities to healthcare professionals to ensure that all people in New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas, and the tribal nations therein have access to best practices for screening, prevention, and treatment of HIV, and will reduce disparities in HIV care, thereby improving the quality of life for persons living with or at risk for HIV.
