Sitefinity Widgets 101 Working with dynamic content and widget components
"Widgets" are drag-and-drop components used to add content and/or layout regions (grids) to a page or page template.
When working on a page or page template inside the editor screen, you will find all of the available widgets on the right-hand side of the screen in the widget "toolbox." You can add any of these widgets to the page by simply dragging and dropping the desired widget into place.
Widgets are easy to use and all share common operations. Once you get the hang of working with a widget or two, you will find it easy to acclimate to working with any of them.
Widget Types
There's a widget for that. ;)
There are three main types of widgets in Sitefinity: Layout, Static, and Dynamic.
- Layout
- As the name suggests, layout widgets are used for defining specific layout regions of the page using responsive design grids. You can find these widgets by clicking on the "Layout" tab above the widget toolbox on the right-hand side of the screen.
- Static
- Static content widgets are for creating content directly in the page, the most common example being the "Content Block" widget. Additionally, Content Blocks can also be saved as "Shared Content" which can then be used across numerous pages. Other examples of static content widgets include the CSS, JavaScript or Embed Code widgets.
- Dynamic
- The dynamic content widgets are used to display, filter and sort dynamic content created using any of the powerful Sitefinity data collection types such as Blogs, News, Events, Images, Lists and so on.
