The UTMB SBB program provides comprehensive training in all phases of blood banking.   The technical and didactic curriculum covers a period of twelve months.  All information is provided via the internet and student can do clinical rotations at their facility or other places. 

The University of Texas Medical Branch Specialist in Blood Bank Technology Program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (www.caahep.org) upon the recommendation of  American Association of Blood Banks Committee on Accreditation.

 Successful completion of this program will permit the Trainee to sit for the certifying examination for specialists in blood bank technology given by the Board of Registry of the American Society for Clinical Pathology.  The program does not lead to a Master's degree, nor is graduate credit given for any of the didactic work.

June 2000, the first distance education program for SBBs started.  There have been 78 graduates as of June 2008; results from the ASCP exam can be found here. 21 students were accepted for the distance program  March 2008. 

Application deadline for the March 2009 program is August 2008.

 

The training consists of clinical rotations in various areas of the blood bank and related laboratories/sections. Students will receive their clinical training at their place of employment and other places; it will be up to the student to find a suitable place to complete the clinical training.  Checklists will be maintained to determine clinical training expertise.  This is a VERY busy year; you will take 14 exams, do research, management and education projects AND complete 20+ clinical checklists.   

Housing is not available on the UTMB campus.  Applications are reviewed/evaluated upon receipt of all requirements.  Once the student is accepted into the program, $800 must be paid; this amount will be reduced from the total $3000 fee imposed for this program.This fee is not considered tuition but a fee imposed for continuing education.  THIS FEE IS NOT REFUNDABLE. The $2200 must be paid on the first day of the program.  The $800 and the $2200 is  non refundable.

UTMB SBB program shares the curriculum with four other facilities:  Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center in Houston Texas - Education Coordinator Clare Wong, Florida Blood Services in Tampa Florida - Education Coordinator Marge Doty, Central Indiana Blood Center in Indianapolis, Indiana - Education Coordinator Jayanna Slayton, Community Blood Centers and Community Tissue Services of Dayton, Ohio - Education Coordinator Nancy Lang.  The curriculum is reviewed and updated by all five facilities on an annual basis.  Applications for each program must be completed and must meet that facilities' rules and regulations.
