Community Engagement and Education

Through the visionary leadership of the UTMB Provost and President, the Office of Community Engagement and Interprofessional Education was established to guide this work under the guidance of the Assistant Provost for Community Engagement and Education’s office.

We are committed to transformation of the model of community engagement and education at academic medical centers.  We are guided by the following pillars in our work:

Value-Added Education
• Experiential learning that adds value and capacity to our health care systems
• Improve health care today while educating the leaders of tomorrow
• Harnessing untapped capacity of thousands of students

Innovative Partnerships
• Community Organizations
• Philanthropic Support
• Academic Enterprise
• Health System

Community Engagement
Mutually beneficial exchange of knowledge and resources
• Grounded in partnership, reciprocity, mutual respect, shared authority and co-creation of goals and outcomes
Partnerships help mobilize resources and influence systems, change relationships among partners, and serve as catalysts for changing policies, programs, and practices.

    • Learners are participating to meet curricular requirements
    • The planning and implementation of the SL curriculum is done in partnership
    • SL places equal value on the service objectives defined by the community as it does on the learning objectives

      Interprofessional Practice
      • Infuse interprofessional education and practice into core and experiential programs
      • Students will apply the principles of team and relationship-building dynamics on an interprofessional healthcare team
