As noted in the Galveston Daily News on July 4, Family Medicine’s own Barbara L. Thompson (UTMB class of 1971) was recently honored and received the UTMB Ashbel Smith Distinguished Alumnus Award. The other honorees are Drs. Fred F. Castrow II, class of 1961; Walter F. Hasskarl (posthumously), class of 1942; and Sanford A. Rubin, class of 1966. They were honored on June 5 at the UTMB School of Medicine class of 2010 commencement. “Because of their dedication and passion for their profession, thousands of people are living better lives,” said Dr. Garland D. Anderson, provost and dean of the UTMB School of Medicine.

We are pleased to announce that Dickinson Family Health Clinic has been approved by ACGME as a Residency Training Site.

With the departure of Family Medicine’s Residency Director, Lisa Nash, chairman, Dr. Barbara Thompson has named Dr. Syed Azhar interim Director of the Family Medicine Residency Program. In addition, Dr. Richard Erickson is named the Director of the Family Medicine Osteopathic Residency Program.

Unfortunately, we must say good-bye to Dr. Lisa Nash, Associate Professor and Director of the Family Medicine Residency Program. We offer Dr. Nash our sincerest congratulations and she will surely be missed within the department. Everyone in Family Medicine wishes her success as her academic education career blossoms.

FM Residency Program received 3 years RRC Accreditation

Dr. Hussein will be rejoining our department as a clinician educator in the residency program and Assistant Medical Director of the Family Medicine UHC Clinic mid February.

Dickinson Family Health Clinic, located at 3828 Hughes Court, Suite 203, will open Oct. 1 and offer comprehensive treatment of adults and children with diabetes, hypertension, asthma, heart disease, respiratory conditions and acute illnesses such as colds, infections and minor injuries (cuts and sprains).
