Visiting Students
UTMB Global Health accepts visiting medical students for electives through the Visiting Student Application System (VSAS). Travel is not allowed during UTMB Period 8 (December – early January).
Available Field Sites
UTMB Kenya: Maua Methodist Hospital, Maua, Kenya (Clinical)
• 4-week Program Fee: $1760 (includes housing and ground transportation; airfare not included)
UTMB Uganda: Nyakibale Hospital, Rukungiri, Uganda (Clinical)
• 4-week Program Fee: $1500 (includes housing, meals, and ground transportation; airfare not included)
UTMB Peru: UTMB-UPCH Collaborative Research Center, Cusco, Peru (Translational Research)
• 4-week Program Fee: $500 (housing, meals, ground transportation; and airfare NOT included)
Child Family Health International Sites (except Mexico)
• 4-week Program Fee—varies by site and program, please see website
Andean Global Studies (Medical Spanish)
• 4-week Program Fee—varies, please see website
Adventure Education Center (Medical Spanish/classroom-based)

Process and Requirements
- Contact Dr. Bindi Naik-Mathuria about interest. Include: home institution, intended rotation dates, field site(s) of interest, and for medical Spanish rotations—current level of Spanish proficiency
- Complete VSAS application submission materials for INTL 4015 (INTL 4042 for Adventure Education Center)
- Complete a phone interview with Dr. Naik-Mathuria
- Your VSAS application will be approved and we will continue the process upon successful completion of this interview.
After Successful Interview:
- Rotation Dates—please send Dr. Bindi Naik-Mathuria your official rotation dates as well as the end date of the rotation previous and start date of next rotation—this will help us plan your actual dates at the field site vs. travel dates. Please keep in mind you will need to be at the field site in for 4 weeks to receive credit.
- You will receive a timeline with important dates such as deposit/payment dates, orientation, pre-departure preparation due dates, and post-rotation assignment due dates
Elective Requirements:
• UTMB International Travel Paperwork (will be sent to you to sign as soon as we receive rotation dates)
• Mandatory Pre-Travel Orientation (will be done by phone or web-meeting)
• Compliance with Policies for Global Health Electives (more on this at orientation)
• Pre-departure Preparation Modules
• Global Ambassador for Patient Safety (GAPS) Online Certificate
• Pre-departure Global Health Rotation Preparation Worksheet assignment
• Rotation at UTMB Peru in Cusco may require additional preparation
