PHOTO CONTEST

Who can enter?
Trainees (students in any program, residents, fellows) can submit photographs that they have taken during a global health field experience in a low-income country or a local (domestic) low-resource setting. All photographs submitted must have been taken by the trainee submitting them. Only photos taken by registered attendees of the 2018 UTMB Global Health Education Symposium will be considered for contest awards.

Submission Information
Photographs must have been taken between 7/1/2017 and 8/20/2018.

Trainees can submit up to three 8x10 photographs (Matte finishing, NO GLOSSY PRINTS!)

Electronic submission of photograph titles and brief (150 word maximum) descriptions of the photograph’s connection to global health or local (domestic) health in low-resource settings is required in an MS Word document. Please enumerate picture titles and descriptions so that they correspond with the picture numbers in the JPG files.

Photographs may depict global or domestic (low-resource) health challenges, solutions, and/or peoples, cultures, and physical environments.

Trainees will maintain ownership of their photographs, however, UTMB reserves the right to use submitted photographs in promotional materials.

Subject matter can include portraits, landscapes, or any subject that depicts a global health or domestic (low-resource) issue.

Submission Guidelines

Submit no more than three photographs and one document that includes the photograph titles and description to the Global Health office.

Ethical Considerations1

When photographing people (or submitting photos of people you have already taken), we greatly encourage you to employ the following:

  • Respect the person you are photographing and treat that person with dignity.
  • If possible, obtain verbal consent from the person or people you wish to photograph and then show them your digital photograph to ensure they are comfortable with it.
  • If you are taking pictures of children, try to obtain the verbal consent of their parents or guardians.
  • Be particularly mindful when taking pictures of the vulnerability and privacy of people who are receiving health care—respect their privacy and follow the photography rules of their health care facility.
  • We discourage you from taking pictures of people when they are unclothed out of respect for their privacy.
  • Be mindful of whether or not you are representing the person accurately and/or the community accurately.
  • Be mindful of your intent in taking the photograph (e.g. are you taking it to portray a situation, raise public awareness, capture something beautiful, etc)

Selection Criteria
Winners will be selected by a panel of judges. Photographs will be judged by their technical and artistic merits as well as their ability to convey a global health message.

Prizes
Trainees submitting winning photographs will receive a cash prize and a certificate recognizing their accomplishment. Winners will be announced prior to the 2018 UTMB Global Health Education Symposium on Saturday, October 13th.  Only photos of registered attendees will be considered for contest awards.

All submissions will be displayed at the UTMB Global Health Education Symposium on Saturday, October 13, 2018.
