In 13 years that I have been visiting Maua Methodist Hospital, I have seen the single-room, small laboratory remodeled into a much larger 3 room, modern laboratory.

Mariano Garcia-Blanco, M.D., Ph.D., professor and chair of biochemistry and molecular biology at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, is a collaborator on a project to develop a portable device that will rapidly, accurately, and inexpensively detect the Zika virus at airports.

Seafarers are people who live and work at sea. They contribute to the majority of global trade via the shipping industry, yet are an understudied population. Their transient lives make them easily forgotten, as they often spend no more than a couple of days at each port they visit.

Funded through a grant from the Texas Medical Center (TMC) Health Policy Institute, this research report uncovers government policies, agency practices and environmental factors associated with the health of child migrants fleeing violence from Central America and Mexico and their ability to receive adequate healthcare in the United States. A cross-disciplinary research team from four TMC institutions (University of Texas Medical Branch, Baylor College of Medicine, Texas Children’s Hospital, and University of Houston Clearlake) produced this report.
