I am delighted to announce that Dr. Muhammad A. Mujtaba, MBBS, FASN, FAST has accepted the role as Interim Division Chief of Nephrology. In this role Dr. Mujtaba will follow in the footsteps of Dr. John Badalamenti who is stepping down from his leadership role after 13 years. Let me begin by thanking Dr. Badalamenti for his tremendous service and leadership over the years. Thankfully, Dr. Badalamenti will continue to work with us as a nephrologist and educator.

Dr. Mujtaba is currently an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Department of Nephrology and the Director of the UTMB Transplant Center. He received his medical degree from Allama Iqbal Medical College, Punjab University Lahore, Pakistan in 2000. Dr. Mujtaba completed his Internal Medicine Residency training at Harlem Hospital Center (NY) in 2006. His Adult Nephrology/Hypertension fellowship from Columbia University in 2008, followed by a Transplant Fellowship at Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM) in 2009. Dr. Mujtaba joined the IUSM Nephrology division as faculty in 2009 and was recruited to UTMB in January 2015 as an Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine, and Medical Director of Kidney, Pancreas and Living Donor Transplantation. Under his leadership, the UTMB kidney transplant program has grown the number of transplants from 33 per year in 2014 to 108 per year in 2022 with excellent outcomes and patient satisfaction.

Dr. Mujtaba has served nationally on United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) committees. He is active in the National Kidney Foundation (NKF) and the American Transplant Society (ATS). He has been part of the American Society of Nephrology (ASN) Task Force on physician compensation, as well as related ASN educational activities in the form of NephSAP and KSAP reviews. Dr. Mujtaba is well known for his work in the field of transplant immunosuppression for kidney, pancreas, intestinal, multi-visceral transplant, rejection prevention, management, monitoring, and desensitization therapies with more than 140 published manuscripts and abstracts. He also serves as an editorial board member for the journal of Clinical Transplantation and the Journal of Nephrology and Renal Disease.

Outside of UTMB, Dr. Mujtaba enjoys spending time with his three children and wife. He enjoys playing cricket, cards, badminton, and squash.

Please join me in congratulating Dr. Mujtaba on his appointment to this important role.

Sincerely,
Pete
