The
Department of Microbiology & Immunology (M&I) occupies
approximately 37,000 square feet of laboratory and office space. The
majority of this space is located on the 3rd and 4th floors of the
Truman G. Blocker, Jr. Medical Research Building which opened in 1991.
In addition to this space, M&I investigators are located in the
immediately adjacent Libby Moody Thompson Basic Science Building, the
Galveston National Laboratory and the Keiller Building. All spaces are
well equipped to support biomedical research. In addition to the more
traditional biological safety level (BSL) 2 laboratories, the Galveston
National Laboratory and Keiller buildings have BSL3 and BSL4
facilities to support both in vitro and in vivo studies requiring higher levels of containment.
The Department also sponsors several of the many core facilities on
campus. Specifically, the Tissue Culture Core Facility, a well-equipped
Flow Cytometry Core, a state-of-the-art Optical Imaging Core, and a
BSL3/BSL4 Aerobiology Core capable of doing regulated studies.
