We are a group of dedicated Eye Care professionals committed to providing excellent health care to our patients, training the next generation of ophthalmologists, and conducting cutting-edge research to help prevent blindness.

We believe that we provide the best ophthalmologic care in the Southwest region. We are proud to practice in an island environment where our patients are also our guests.

We look forward to seeing you soon.

Medical Students/Resident Applicants,                                 October 10, 2008

As you are aware, the University of Texas Medical Branch campus suffered significant damage due to Hurricane Ike.  The University Eye Center Clinic in Galveston, however, was relatively unscathed.  All of our diagnostic and therapeutic equipment is functional.  In fact, we are planning the return of patient care and surgical services within the month.

Resident training is a top priority as we determine the best way to resume operations.  We have recently opened the UTMB University Eye Center, Friendswood, a mainland clinic, which is growing beyond expectations.  With our existing UTMB University Eye Center, Galveston and Texas Department of Corrections facility, our patient mix will provide an excellent base for resident training.

Much of the research laboratories have already been reinstated.  Faculty and staff did a superb job of protecting vital data and equipment prior to the storm.

We have added four new faculty members which further expands the breadth of our resident education:

Oday Alsheikh, MD:  Cornea/External Disease and Refractive Surgery

John Davis, MD:  Pediatric Ophthalmology and Adult Strabismus

Manuj Kapur, MD:  Cornea/External Disease and Refractive Surgery

Gibran Khurshid, MD, MS, FRCS:  Anterior Segment Reconstruction, Vitreoretinal Disease, and Adult Ocular Oncology

In the midst of these difficult times, we see the opportunity to expand and improve resident training.  The University of Texas Medical Branch Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences has a tradition of exceptional clinical and research training which we will continue to provide in bigger and better ways.

Sincerely,

Brian R. Wong, MD
Resident Program Director
