Faculty Profile

  • Dr. O'Mahony received his MB, BCh, BAO, and MD from University College Dublin. He completed his residency and fellowship at Long Island Jewish Medical Center and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, respectively. To further enhance his expertise, Dr. O'Mahony pursued advanced coursework in Palliative Medicine at Harvard Medical School.

    Prior to joining UTMB, Dr. O'Mahony served as a Professor at Rush University and held key roles at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. His administrative experience includes serving as Director of Supportive Oncology and Section Chief at Rush Medical College.

    Throughout his career, Dr. O'Mahony has led numerous impactful clinical programs and research projects. His work includes multidisciplinary palliative medicine initiatives in Emergency Departments, ICUs, and via telemedicine between long-term and acute care settings. He is currently co-leading a multi-center educational program to expand palliative care access across Chicago. Dr. O'Mahony's research focuses on evaluating educational programs that address barriers to palliative care for underserved patients.

    As an active member of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (AAHPM), Dr. O'Mahony has chaired several committees and special interest groups. His contributions to the field have been recognized with awards such as the Best Poster Educational Research Award. He is also a Fellow of the AAHPM.

    Dr. O'Mahony has demonstrated a strong commitment to education throughout his career, teaching and mentoring numerous students, residents, and fellows on topics including pain management, palliative care, and clinical research.

    In his new role at UTMB, Dr. O'Mahony will oversee TDCJ and inpatient Palliative Care consultations, bringing his wealth of experience to benefit our patients and medical community. We are confident that Dr. O'Mahony's leadership will significantly enhance our Palliative Care program and contribute to UTMB's mission of providing exceptional patient care, education, and research.
