Vijaya Murthy, MBSSI am delighted to announce the appointment of Dr. Vijaya Murthy as interim Division Chief of Rheumatology. Dr. Murthy will succeed Dr. Emilio Gonzalez as he transitions into retirement after almost 20 years of outstanding service at UTMB.

Currently an Associate Professor in the Division of Rheumatology, Department of Internal Medicine, Dr. Murthy received her medical degree from JSS Medical College in Mysore, India. Dr. Murthy completed her Internal Medicine residency and rheumatology fellowship here at UTMB.

In 2013, she joined UTMB as faculty in the Division of Rheumatology. Dr. Murthy cares for a variety of rheumatologic diseases, with interests in idiopathic inflammatory myopathies and systemic sclerosis. Dr. Murthy has a particular interest in trainee education; she is the Director of the Rheumatology Fellowship Program and provides lectures for a wide range of learners including PA and PhD students, as well as residents in internal and family medicine.

Dr. Murthy is an active member of the American College of Rheumatology and State of Texas Association of Rheumatologists.

Outside of UTMB Dr. Murthy enjoys spending time with her two children and husband. She enjoys traveling and art.
