Management of portal hypertension: Improving outcomes emergently and for the long run, a team sport

Objectives: At this conclusion of this presentation, participants should be able to:

  1. Understand role of pre-emptive TIPS placement in patients with variceal bleeding with CTP scores of 8-13.
  2. Identify the presence of clinically significant portal hypertension and understand role of beta-blockade in this entity.
  3. Direct conversion of beta-blocker usage in cirrhotic patients away from selective beta blockers and propranolol, and toward carvedilol usage.

Target Audience and Needs: Internal Medicine faculty, staff, registered nurses, residents, fellows, students, and internists specializing in Allergy & Immunology, Cardiology, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, General Medicine, Geriatrics, Hematology & Oncology, Infectious Diseases, Nephrology, Palliative Care, Pulmonary Critical Care & Sleep Medicine, and Rheumatology need to be regularly updated with new research and guidelines regarding the evaluation and management of medical disorders and implement them in clinical practice to enhance the quality of patient care and improve patient outcomes.

Educational Methods: Educational methods will include lectures, case presentations, literature review, and panel discussion.

Activity Evaluation: Participants may be asked to complete a session evaluation.
