A Message from the Chair - Division Chief of Endocrinology

McKinney, Kevin

I am delighted to announce that Kevin McKinney, MD, FACE has accepted the role as Division Chief of Endocrinology. In this role Dr. McKinney will follow in the footsteps of a great tradition of prior Endocrinology Chiefs including Dr. Randall Urban, and Dr. Nicola Abate. Dr. McKinney has provided outstanding leadership as interim Division Chief and I am thrilled to see him assume the permanent role.

Dr. McKinney received his Bachelor of Arts in Biochemistry from the University of Texas in Austin and received his MD from UTMB in 1992. He continued at UTMB for both his Internal Medicine Residency and Endocrinology Fellowship. In 1997, Dr. McKinney joined the Department of Medicine as full-time faculty in the Division of Endocrinology. Dr. McKinney is passionate about clinical endocrinology, medical education, and improving care for underserved populations.

Dr. McKinney has been extremely active at a local, regional, and national level. He is the Co-Chair of the Texas Medical Association’s Task for on Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Racism. On a national level he was a member of the AMA’s Commission to End Health Care Disparities. He previously served as the Chair of the AMA’s Minority Affairs Consortium.

As Division Chief of Endocrinology, Dr. McKinney is looking to build the clinical enterprise in areas including obesity and metabolic syndrome as well as transgender care. He is also looking forward to building research in the Division in the areas of health equity and minority health with a particular focus on the Southeast Texas population.

In his spare time Kevin enjoys photography – he does family and portrait photography but has a preference for landscape, wildlife and urban photography. He also enjoys traveling – which he is looking forward to doing in the near future, hiking and bicycling.

Please join me in congratulating Dr. McKinney on his appointment.

Sincerely,
Pete
