I am delighted to announce the appointment of Dr. Shawn Nishi as interim Division Chief of Pulmonary Critical Care and Sleep Medicine.
Dr. Nishi will succeed Dr. Gulshan Sharma as he moves on to focus fully on his CMO Role here at UTMB.
Dr. Shawn Nishi was originally born in Honolulu, HI; however, she thinks of herself as a true Texan since this is where she was raised. She attended Coe College in Cedar Rapids, IA graduating Summa Cum Laude in Biology, Molecular Biology and Chemistry.
Dr. Nishi graduated medical school from UTMB followed by an Internal Medicine residency and fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine. She is board certified in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Interventional Pulmonology.
Dr. Nishi is a respected authority in the field of Interventional Pulmonology and is also an outstanding teacher and educator. She has worked to establish interventional pulmonary procedures at UTMB for minimally invasive diagnosis and treatment of lung
cancer and thoracic disease. She has also launched the lung cancer screening & incidental nodule program here at UTMB. Her passion for cutting-edge techniques and unwavering commitment to her patients have earned her widespread recognition in
the medical community. As an educator, she has a passion for teaching at the bedside which has given her the opportunity to teach pulmonary procedures regionally and nationally in a variety of simulation venues. As a researcher, her interests include
outcomes and innovations in lung cancer screening, interventional pulmonology, and COPD.
Beyond work, Dr. Nishi leads a fulfilling personal life. She finds solace in the great outdoors, indulging in hobbies such as gardening, fishing, hiking, and CrossFit. Her greatest joy, however, comes from spending quality time with her family (husband
Mike King, who is Deputy Chief Information Officer at UTMB and daughter, Malia who loves all things related to soccer, orchestra, dachsunds, and food experimentation, and sister, Kele).
