Short Courses:

Mini Session of R Software Training (Dr. Wang)

Dates: August 29, 2023 – August 31, 2023

Introduction to Linear Models (Dr. Yu)

Dates: September 5, 2023 – October 3, 2023

This course introduces the most common statistical models used in data analysis, which model the relationship between a continuous outcome and one or more explanatory variables.

Categorical Data Analysis (Dr. Chakraborty)

Dates: October 5, 2023 – November 2, 2023

This course surveys theory and methods for the analysis of categorical response data. Students will learn the basics of chi-square tests and logistic regression.

Survival Analysis (Dr. Kuo)

Dates: November 7-16, 2023 & November 28, 2023 – December 14, 2023

This course introduces fundamental concepts in survival analysis and the statistical methods which are useful in medical follow-up studies for time-to-event outcomes. The following topics are included in this course: censoring, truncation, hazard and survival functions, Kaplan-Meier estimator, log-rank tests, Cox proportional hazards model.

Machine Learning (Dr. Wang)

Dates: January 9, 2024 -February 8, 2024

This course introduces principles, algorithms, and applications of machine learning from the point of view of modeling and prediction. Algorithms covered include Classification and Regression Trees, Random Forests, Gradient Boosted Trees, Support Vector Machines, and Multivariate Adaptive Regression Splines.

Introduction to Big Data Visual Analytics (Dr. Bhavnani)

Dates: February 13, 2024 – March 7, 2024 & March 19-21, 2024

This course provides the theoretical foundations and practical methods related to visual analytics focused on the analysis and interpretation of large and complex biomedical datasets (e.g., genomic data, and electronic health records). The theoretical foundations will focus on principles related to cognition, computation, and graphic design. The practical methods will focus on using commercial applications and research prototypes which integrate machine learning with visual analytics.

Introduction to Public Health Informatics (Dr. Amith)

Dates: March 26, 2024 – April 25, 2024

The course is designed to be an overview of major topics related to this interdisciplinary field that combines various sub-fields in public health, and the application of sub-topics from the computer and information sciences. Topics will include introduction to aspects of information theories, exposure to applied methods and tools in informatics, ethics and standards, and an overview of sub-fields within public health informatics (public health informatics, consumer informatics, geographic informatics, etc.).

Additional Information:

All assignments and recordings will be located on Blackboard. Zoom links will be sent for you to be able to attend live lectures. As we would like you to attend 100% of all live lectures, you must attend at least 50% of live lectures. For the lectures which you cannot attend, there is requirement to view the recorded lectures.
