EMG and NCV Laboratory

What is it?

This is a specialty Laboratory dedicated to the investigation of diseases of nerves and muscles. The test consists of 2 parts: NCV (Nerve conduction study) and Needle EMG Electromyography).

Conditions commonly evaluated include:

  • Radiculopathy
  • Plexopathy
  • Compression or entrapment neuropathies (Carpal Tunnel, Ulnar Neuropathies etc..)
  • Polyneuropathy
  • Muscle Diseases
  • Myasthenia Gravis and other diseases of the neuromuscular junction
  • Motor Neuron Disease.

Our Team:

EMGs are performed by UTMB faculty: Dr. Elena Shanina, MD, PhD

Our chief technician Monique Garcia performs NCVs.

What diagnostic tests are available?

  • Nerve conduction studies
  • Electromyography
  • Repetitive stimulation test for neuromuscular transmission disorders
  • Limited autonomic function testing and other special studies.

Teaching and Education:

Education and training are integral parts of the EMG Lab teaching activities. Rotating residents obtain training in the performance and interpretation of NCVs and EMGs. Medical students interested in Neurology have an opportunity to observe NCV/EMG studies during their rotations.

Referrals:

Patients are typically referred by their physicians. Specialists in neurology, neurosurgery, plastic and orthopedic surgery, internal medicine and family practice most commonly submit referrals for testing. We also accept patients for second opinions.

Our main number for scheduling patients is (409) 772-1450. Fax (404) 747-2138 to attention of Monique Garcia.
