UTMB is now the only institution in the Greater Houston Area—and 1 of only 5 in the State of Texas—to have a CDC fully-recognized Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP).
PreventT2® program at UTMB is fully recognized by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The program is delivered by certified Lifestyle Coaches trained to implement the program using a CDC-accredited curriculum. Enrolled participants will learn on how to make and maintain lifestyle changes in group sessions of 10-15 participants per class. The groups meet weekly-biweekly (for 6 months) then monthly (for 6 months). Minimal attendance of sessions is required (see Participant Agreement). PreventT2® curriculum is a year-long program of structured sessions. It consists of 2 parts:
Core curriculum (Phase 1: months 1-6) include 16 weekly-biweekly sessions:
- Sessions 1-7 focus on fundamental skills required of participants to achieve their goals. These include a) Monitoring food intake, b) Eating less fat and fewer calories, c) Eating healthfully, d) Being physically active, and e) Balancing eating and physical activity for weight loss.
- Sessions 8-10 address how participants deal with environmental elements which may obstruct the achievement of their goals. These include a) Changing one’s surroundings, b) Problem solving, and c) Healthy eating when not at home.
- Sessions 11-16 target the psychological and emotional issues that may hinder the achievement and maintenance of long-term change. These include a) Overcoming challenges, b) Managing stress, and c) Staying motivated.
Post-Core Curriculum (Phase 2: months 7-12) include 6 monthly sessions tailored to topics relevant to participants helping the transition of participants to maintain their lifestyle changes independently. Key themes are revisited and reinforced.
