According to 2 large studies published in BMJ this week, higher consumption of fruit, vegetables and whole grain foods were associated with a lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

  1. European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC)-InterAct study, including 340,234 participants in eight European countries: they showed that every 66 grams per day increase in total fruit and vegetable intake was associated with a 25% lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
  2. Nurses' Health Study, Nurses' Health Study II, and Health Professionals Follow-Up Study, including 194,784 participants: they found that total whole grain consumption had a 29% lower rate of type 2 diabetes. Even consumption of 1 or more servings/day of whole grain was associated with about 20% reduced risk for type 2 diabetes.

True that these are observational studies that cannot establish a cause-effect relationship, yet, this info is very valuable.

So, please focus on eating more veggies, fruits and whole grain and educate others about it.
