Curriculum

Curriculum Overview: The UTMB Geriatrics Fellowship Program provides robust geriatrics education and training experiences. During the 12-month period, geriatric medicine fellows participate in several rotations, which have special relevance to the aging process, and complicated medical problems.

  • During first month of fellowship, fellows get introduction to essential geriatric topics to make them familiar with many geriatric issues they will encounter during their clinical rotations.
  • Program provide didactic training in a wide range of services including inpatient geriatric service (acute care for the elderly (ACE) unit), geriatric medicine consultation, geriatric psychiatry, physical rehabilitation, palliative/hospice care, geriatric clinics, house calls, and skilled and community nursing facilities. Fellows also have ambulatory months focusing on movement disorders, urinary incontinence, osteoporosis, dermatology, wound care. rheumatology, neurology, sleep medicine, pain service, and urology-gynecology.
  • Fellows participating in Geriatrics grand rounds, morbidity and mortality conference, journal club/research course, medical education series, art of presentation series, case conferences and a board review course.
  • Fellows get opportunity to attend the Lefeber Winter Series on Aging, and a Forum on Aging, which provide trainees with a broad scope of Geriatric education. 
  • In addition, fellows also participate in a quality improvement project. Each fellow completes an individual academic project that they present at local and national meetings.
  • Our fellows also involved in research projects. Every year, almost all fellows presents their abstract, presentation and/or posters in local and national conferences like AGS (American Geriatrics Society) (AGS) annual meeting. Our fellows have multiple abstracts & papers in journals such as JAGS & JAMA.
