  • Dr. Markowitz received his undergraduate degree in Biochemistry from Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey, in 1977 and earned his medical degree from the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine in 1981. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine at the University of California, San Diego, in 1984, followed by a fellowship in Medical Oncology at the Cancer Research Institute at UCSF completed in 1986.

    He began his career at UCSF as a Clinical Instructor in 1986 as a clinical investigator and, in 1987, accepted a faculty appointment at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Clinical Immunology and Biological Therapy. There, he advanced clinical investigations with a variety of novel biologic agents. He later served in the Department of Gastrointestinal Medical Oncology before completing his tenure at M.D. Anderson in 1995.

    Dr. Markowitz moved to Bryan/College Station, Texas, and established his own clinical practice in 1995. While there until 2005 he established two American College of Surgeons accredited Cancer Centers at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center and College Station Medical Center. He also served as Director of Research and multiple clinical trials.

    He was recruited to UTMB as Division Chief of Hematology/Oncology in 2005 and continued until UTMB’s merger with MD Anderson. Dr. Markowitz continued to provide cancer care and conduct clinical research while also serving as Medical Oncology Fellowship Program director for 5 years. He chaired the Cancer Committee and served as Associate Medical Director of Experimental Therapeutics in the UTMB Comprehensive Cancer Center. He directed the Oncology Clinical Trials Office, which monitors adult clinical Oncology research at UTMB. His research interests include novel drug development with a focus on targeted therapy and immunotherapy, and his clinical expertise includes the management of patients with chronic leukemia, lymphoma, and breast cancer.
