Faculty Profile

  • Dr. Hemil Gonzalez earned his medical degree at the Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo in his native Dominican Republic. He completed an internal medicine residency at the Cook County Hospital in Chicago and a fellowship in infectious diseases at Rush University Medical Center. Throughout his training, he received several awards for his clinical skills, patient care and teaching ability. Additionally, he was the recipient of the 2019-2021 Minority HIV Investigator Mentoring Program (MHIMP) Award, given by the AIDS Clinical Trials Group (ACTG). He joined the faculty at the University of Texas Medical Branch in 2024 as an Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases at UTMB. He is active clinically and focuses his practice on HIV/AIDS, neurological complications of HIV and associated opportunistic infections, and other infectious diseases impacting the nervous system. His research focuses on the metabolic profiling of glial cells in the context of HIV and other neurological infections. He is a member of the International Society of Neurovirology. Dr Gonzalez enjoys mentoring students and working with trainees in a collegial atmosphere.
