UTMB Heritage Promise Plus

Making a UTMB education more affordable.

The UTMB Heritage Promise Plus is designed to assist in making UTMB undergraduate education more affordable for eligible Texas students. The program uses available federal, state, and institutional grants and scholarships to help cover eligible tuition and fees for students who meet the program requirements.

What is UTMB Heritage Promise Plus?

The UTMB Heritage Promise Plus is a UTMB financial assistance program for eligible Texas residents pursuing their first bachelor's degree. The program is designed to help cover the balance of tuition and mandatory fees for qualified students with demonstrated financial need after all other grants and scholarships are applied.

Heritage Promise Plus is part of the University of Texas System's broader commitment to expanding access to higher education and making college more affordable for Texas students.

Who Can Qualify?

To be considered for the UTMB Heritage Promise Plus, students must meet and maintain all applicable eligibility requirements.

Heritage Promise Plus

  • Texas Resident
Be classified as a Texas resident for tuition purposes and meet applicable Texas residency requirements.
  • 🎓 Undergraduate Student

Be enrolled full-time in an eligible undergraduate program at UTMB and be pursuing your first bachelor's degree.

  • 📝 Submit a FAFSA or TASFA

Complete and submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or, if eligible, the Texas Application for State Financial Aid (TASFA).

Students must also complete any required financial aid requirements before they can be considered for the program.

  • 💰 Demonstrate Financial Need

Have an adjusted family income of $100,000 or less, as determined using financial information reported on the FAFSA or TASFA.

  • Federal Aid Eligible

Students must be eligible to receive federal student aid and be in good standing with any previously awarded federal student aid. Students in default on a federal student loan or otherwise ineligible for federal student aid are not eligible for the Heritage Promise Plus program.

  • 📚 Maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress

Meet UTMB's Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) requirements and remain on track toward completing your degree.

Students must successfully progress through their program and may not remain eligible if they are unable to meet applicable academic progress requirements.

How Does Heritage Promise Plus Work?

Heritage Promise Plus is designed to help cover eligible tuition and mandatory fees using available federal, state, and institutional grants and scholarships.

The amount of Heritage Promise Plus assistance a student receives may vary based on the student's eligibility and other financial assistance received.

Other Tuition Assistance

If a student's tuition and fees are partially covered by a tuition exemption, military education benefit, or other tuition-specific award, UTMB will apply Heritage Promise Plus only toward the remaining eligible tuition and fees.

This means students will not receive Heritage Promise Plus funding for tuition and fees that have already been covered by another tuition-specific source.

Maintaining Your Heritage Promise Plus

Eligibility is reviewed each academic year. To continue receiving Heritage Promise Plus assistance, students must continue to meet all applicable program requirements, including:

  • Maintain Texas residency
  • Complete the FAFSA or TASFA each year
  • Continue to demonstrate financial need
  • Maintain full-time enrollment
  • Continue to pursue a first bachelor's degree
  • Meet UTMB's Satisfactory Academic Progress requirements
  • Complete all required financial aid requirements

Important Things to Know

Heritage Promise Plus is not a separate scholarship that provides a fixed dollar amount. The amount of assistance a student receives depends on their eligibility and other financial aid resources available to them.

Financial aid requirements must be completed. Students must resolve any outstanding requirements before their eligibility can be determined.

Other financial assistance may affect your Heritage Promise Plus award. Tuition exemptions, military benefits, and other tuition-specific assistance may reduce the amount of Heritage Promise Plus funding needed to cover eligible tuition and fees.

Eligibility is not automatic. Students must meet all program requirements and remain eligible throughout their enrollment.
