About Us
The Medical Oncology Fellowship Program at UTMB is a three-year training accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).
The Medical Oncology Fellowship Program is designed to prepare internists for successful careers as specialists in hematology and oncology. Through a comprehensive three-year curriculum, fellows develop the clinical knowledge, technical skills, and professional competencies required to deliver exceptional patient-centered care.
Training is structured around the ACGME's six core competencies: Patient Care, Medical Knowledge, Practice-Based Learning and Improvement, Systems-Based Practice, Professionalism, and Interpersonal and Communication Skills. Fellows are continuously evaluated in each of these areas to ensure progressive development and clinical excellence.
Clinical training includes both required patient care rotations and elective experiences. Core rotations encompass inpatient hematology/oncology services, outpatient clinics, and consultative hematology and oncology services, providing broad exposure to the full spectrum of blood disorders and cancers. Elective rotations allow fellows to pursue individualized interests in subspecialty clinics, research, and other approved educational experiences. Research and elective opportunities are developed in collaboration with faculty mentors and require approval by the Program Director.
