The Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences (GSBS) is pleased to highlight alumnus Kayhan Parsi, JD, PhD, HEC-C. Dr. Parsi received a BA in history from Rice University, a JD from the University of Houston Law Center, and a PhD in medical humanities from UTMB in 1998 under the mentorship of Dr. William J. Winslade.

Dr. Parsi spent over four years at the American Medical Association’s Institute for Ethics, where he served as a fellow, medical ethics education specialist, associate director of academic affairs, and director of academic affairs. In 2002, he joined the faculty of the Neiswanger Institute for Bioethics at Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine. He was promoted to associate professor with tenure in 2007 and to full professor in 2012. He is also the graduate program director of the online master’s and doctoral programs in bioethics. The bioethics graduate programs have grown to be one of the most thriving graduate programs at Loyola, having graduated many successful alumni. In 2018, he was named Graduate Faculty Member of the Year at Loyola University Chicago. He also serves as the moderator for Loyola Bioethics Live, a monthly webinar program where Loyola faculty, students, and guests discuss their work.

Dr. Parsi has published in a variety of areas and has interests in clinical ethics, medical ethics education, professionalism and professional ethics, global health and justice, media and bioethics, and ethical issues related to autism. Since 2012, he has been serving as an associate editor for the American Journal of Bioethics (AJOB), one of the highest impact journals in bioethics.

Dr. Parsi has held multiple roles for the American Society for Bioethics and Humanities (ASBH), the major professional organization for bioethicists and medical humanities scholars in the United States and will serve a two-year term as president in 2021. He is a member of the Loyola University Health System (LUHS) ethics committee and is an ethics consultant for LUHS. He was certified in 2019 by the HCEC Certification Commission and now holds the Healthcare Ethics Consultant-Certified (HEC-C) credential.
