The Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences (GSBS) is pleased to highlight alumnus Dr. Marty Wasserman. Dr. Wasserman has had a remarkable career as a scientist in the pharmaceutical and biotech industry. He received a bachelor’s degree in pharmacy from Rutgers University in 1963, after which he entered the GSBS at UTMB, earning a doctorate in Pharmacology and Toxicology in 1972. He began his professional career at Pfizer Inc. as a Research Investigator in the Department of Hypersensitivity Diseases Research. In 1981, he joined GlaxoSmithKline Corp, where he served as Group Director in the Department of Pharmacology. His work in drug discovery continued at Bristol-Myers Squibb where he was the Director of Biomedical Evaluation (Phase 1 Clinical Investigations), and later at Hoffmann-LaRoche Inc., as Director of Bronchopulmonary Research in the Department of Inflammation and Autoimmune Diseases.
Appointments as Vice President and Sr. Distinguished Scientist in the Respiratory and Rheumatoid Arthritis Group at Sanofi Pharmaceuticals and Senior Vice President of Discovery Research and Chief Scientific Officer at Atherogenics Inc. followed.
Drawing on his vast knowledge and experience, Dr. Wasserman now serves as a consultant, advising companies on corporate strategic planning and contributing to the building and development of R&D organizations. His expertise is sought for university and company committees, scientific advisory boards, development advisory boards and various task forces focused on ongoing and future programs, projects and portfolios.
Dr. Wasserman’s professional accomplishments include numerous invited lectures, keynote speeches, presentations, peer-reviewed publications and abstracts. He was honored as the Distinguished Alumnus of the GSBS in 1986. He has been active in alumni affairs within the Graduate School, including delivering workshops sponsored by the Committee for Career Development. He was elected by alumni as a member of the GSBS Associates Executive Committee in 2018. Congratulations to Dr. Wasserman as the GSBS 50th Anniversary January alumnus!
