Photography

We share our world and tell the great story of UTMB and its people through photographs.

Every aspect of a photo is important: the way it's composed, cropped, illuminated and styled determines how well the public recognizes and relates to our brand. The images in this section are examples of the kind of qualities our photography should have.

Photography Guidelines

  • Patient Privacy & Consent

Patient privacy is a paramount concern in any clinical setting. Any patient who will be interviewed, videotaped or photographed by a UTMB department and/or within a UTMB facility must first sign a UTMB-approved, HIPAA-compliant consent form. Extreme care must be taken to ensure no other patients and/or protected information are ever captured in the background of UTMB photos.

  • Copyrights

Observe and respect copyright laws on images (and other content).

Never assume it's okay to use an image you found on the internet. You need to be certain an image is in the public domain or otherwise free to use or share before you incorporate it into a project.

Always get permission from vendors when using images of equipment or materials.

  • Image Quality & Size

Start with a large file size and crop/resize/compress to your needs. Never start with a small image and try to scale it up or distort the proportions of the original image.

When using images online, be sure to optimize the image for use on the web. This means the file size, dimensions and quality are appropriate and we are not asking our visitors to use unnecessary data while viewing our web pages.

UTMB Profile Photos

To achieve a consistent, unified look on all UTMB professional profiles, there are some basic standards to follow:

  • Backdrop:
The official background for profile and portrait photos at UTMB is a blue/green swirl (see example). The background is available via several of the university's professional photographers, and should always be used.
  • General Attire:
Professional, position-appropriate attire is always required for anyone being photographed to represent the institution.
  • Clinical Providers:
    • Should wear a white lab coat with correct UTMB logo - logo must display in photo
    • Should not wear scrubs under lab coat
    • Male physicians should wear a shirt and tie under the lab coat
    • Female physicians should wear shirts/blouses that are cut modestly under the lab coat
  • Positioning:
Body angled slightly looks better than just straight on. The shoulders are not cut off in the image, image can later be cropped to desired size/look.
  • Size & Resolution:
    • Online, use web-optimized images, 150px wide by 200px high, at the smallest file size possible while still keeping the image quality high. Never use a pixelated image online.
    • For print production, only use high resolution images of good quality.
