Interim Life Safety Risk Assessment and Other Policies

This risk assessment and subsequent implementation of ILSM requirements are designed to ensure that when Life Safety Features are impaired during the course of construction, renovation or alteration activities, they are done so in a manner that will reduce the potential adverse impact on the overall Building Life Safety System. This policy applies to Academic, Research, Business and Healthcare buildings on the Galveston Main Campus, League City Campus, Angleton Danbury Campus and Clear Lake Campus.  For more information, please review the ILSM Policy.

Per the ILSM policy, a fire watch must be provided in certain situations. For example:

  • When a fire alarm system is impaired for more than 4 hours in a 24-hour
  • When an automatic Sprinkler system is impaired for more than 10 hours in a 24-hour period.
  • During hot work, and after the completion of the hot work, continuing for the time specified on the hot work permit (typically 30 minutes).

Fire watch personnel must attend a fire watch training course that meets OSHA requirements found in 29CFR 1910.252, which will include instruction on using a fire extinguisher and fire watch responsibilities.  The fire watch should also be familiar with the building and UTMBs emergency procedures.
