The Radiology Department is comprised of various modalities which perform diagnostic tests ordered by your physician. It may be as simple as a chest x-ray or a more invasive procedure such as an arteriogram of the brain. Radiologic technologists are the healthcare professionals that perform certain diagnostic exams independently or assist radiologists in the performance of invasive procedures. Radiologic technologists are the third largest category of healthcare professionals and are essential to providing quality patient care. All technologists within the Radiology Department must go through an approved educational program, comply with ethics standards, and pass a certification exam within their chosen discipline. Also, they must complete continuing education to maintain their certification. Registration

This is the area of radiology that schedules exams for all modalities of the Radiology Department. Whether you are a patient or a physician calling to schedule an exam, this area assists all of your scheduling needs. The staff in this area can also help to determine co-pays with your insurance company and are knowledgeable in patient preparation instructions that may be necessary in order to complete your/patient testing.

Director, Radiology Services

This individual's role is to ensure efficient and effective patient care operations in Radiology. They are responsible for operations in the Radiology Department, as well as imaging centers in Pearland, League City, Texas City, and Friendswood.

Diagnostic Imaging

This modality is comprised of radiological exams such as Chest and Abdomen x-rays, extremity x-rays and select iodinated contrast exams. The technologists within this area are trained to produce high quality images while still maintaining the lowest possible radiation exposure to the patient.

CT Scan

This area boasts the use of 64-slice scanners in several locations as well as dose reduction software which can decrease the amount of radiation a patient receives as much as 50% in certain exams. This equipment is ACR (American College of Radiology) certified, and must pass vigorous quality standards in order to achieve this certification.

MRI - Magnetic Resonance Imaging

This modality does not use ionizing radiation in order to produce images. These images are created utilizing radiofrequencies within a magnetic field. UTMB is proud to have a 3Telsa Magnet at the Victory Lakes location, with another 3 Tesla Magnet to be installed in the fall of 2011 at the Galveston location. Tesla refers to the unit of measure for magnets. Most magnets used in MRI are .6 to 1.5 Tesla, thus with our 3Tesla MRI units, the radiologists will have better, clearer pictures to diagnose patients. This equipment is ACR (American College of Radiology) certified, and must pass vigorous quality standards in order to achieve this certification.

US - Ultrasound

This modality in the Radiology Department uses sound wave "echoes" to produce images of the organs and other structures found in the body. There is no ionizing radiation exposure to the patient when this exam is performed. This equipment is ACR (American College of Radiology) certified, and must pass vigorous quality standards in order to achieve this certification. The Ultrasound Technologists at UTMB are required to have ARDMS (American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography) certification which ensures that our patients are being imaged by technologists who have met the highest quality standards of their field.

Mammography
This modality uses a low-dose x-ray to aid in early detection and diagnosis of breast diseases of both women and men. UTMB utilizes the two most recent advances in mammography, Digital Mammography and Computer-aided detection (CAD). Digital mammography utilizes solid state detectors which convert x-rays into electrical signals, which are then used to produce images of the breast. The radiologist as well as a computer search for abnormalities which may need further analysis. All mammography locations are ACR (American College of Radiology) certified, and must pass vigorous quality standards in order to achieve this certification.

Radiology Community Outreach
Nuclear Medicine/PET CT

This modality uses radioactive material to either diagnose or treat a variety of diseases. Some of the common types of tests performed in this area help to identify inflammation in the gallbladder, visualize bloodflow and bloodflow problems of the heart, evaluate bones for fractures and even determine the presence or spread of cancer in various body parts. PET/CT scans are performed to pinpoint area of the body that have abnormal metabolic activity. This equipment is ACR (American College of Radiology) certified, and must pass vigorous quality standards in order to achieve this certification.

Vascular & Interventional Radiology

This modality is a growing area of medicine involving highly skilled team of physicians called Interventional radiologists who use image guidance (x-rays and other imaging modalities) to perform minimally invasive procedures for the diagnosis and treatment of disease. These procedures are typically less invasive and easier for the patient because they involve small incisions, less risk and less pain to the patient and shorter recovery times which can often replace open surgical procedures.

Imaging library (Request for copy of Radiology Images)

This area of the radiology department is responsible for maintaining the release of diagnostic images for all modalities of radiology. Because the Department of Radiology utilizes a PACS (Picture Archive Computer System) storage system, all of our radiology exams are stored digitally and can be reviewed by all of UTMB physicians from anywhere is the hospital. If your physician or surgeon is not affiliated with UTMB and needs to review the images from your exam performed in the radiology department, click to request your Radiology Images to be sent to you electronically. Or if you prefer, you may pick up a copy of your images at one of our 4 locations.

Medical Records

All patient health care information at UTMB is confidential. Therefore, medical records cannot be released to any person or organization without the consent of the patient or the patient's legally authorized representative (unless authorized by law).
Written Authorization
Requests for the release of medical records (protected health information) must be submitted in writing and must contain all the elements required by law. Authorizations must also be dated and signed by the patient or the patient's legally authorized representative. In the case of a minor, a parent or legal guardian must sign the authorization.

When completing the HIPAA form you must present:

Processing Fees

A current fee schedule for disclosure of health care information is available on the UTMB Health Information Management Web Site. No fee is assessed when the information is being sent to another health care provider or is for a social security disability claim. Requests for medical record information for social security disability claims must be accompanied by a supporting letter from the Social Security Administration.

CD's may be obtained for personal use but there is a $15.00 charge for them. X-Ray film is available and the cost is $10.00 per page.
