Vascular and Interventional Radiology Division
The Vascular and Interventional Radiology (VIR) Division at UTMB Radiology is comprised of fellowship-trained interventional radiologists who provide minimally invasive, image-guided diagnostic and therapeutic procedures across the vascular and non-vascular systems. Faculty in this division are recognized for their expertise in the management of oncologic, vascular, hepatobiliary, and genitourinary disease through catheter-based and percutaneous techniques.
Members of this division routinely perform procedures including angiography and endovascular intervention, transarterial chemoembolization and Yttrium-90 radioembolization (performed in partnership with Nuclear Medicine and Theranostics), percutaneous biopsy and drainage, dialysis access intervention, and management of venous disease, including deep vein thrombosis and venous insufficiency. The division utilizes fluoroscopy, ultrasound, and CT guidance within a dedicated procedural suite.
IR faculty collaborate closely with Oncology, Hepatology, Vascular Surgery, and Nephrology colleagues and participate in relevant multidisciplinary tumor board conferences. The division also plays a role in UTMB's comprehensive stroke and trauma services on the Galveston campus.
UTMB Radiology Residents rotate through Interventional Radiology and, based on their level of training, participate in pre-procedural evaluation, image-guided procedures, and post-procedural patient care.
