The Learning Communities

Learning Communities logo

The Learning Communities (LCs) at John Sealy School of Medicine are designed to foster meaningful connection, mentorship, and professional identity formation throughout all four years of medical school. Committed to every learner flourishing throughout their Road to Residency, LCs provide students with consistent faculty guidance, peer mentorship, and co-curricular opportunities for reflection and growth.

Through integrated career and elective advising, student affairs wellness curriculum, clinical skills development, and community-building experiences, the LCs create a supportive framework that nurtures academic success, career exploration, and personal well-being. Our goal is simple: every student is known, supported, and prepared to thrive competent and confident future physicians.

The key foundations and components include:

  • Dedicated spaces for each community to connect with peers, faculty, and Student Affairs support staff
  • Career and elective advising
  • Guidance on clinical skills development and curriculum-focused study (Phase I)
  • Opportunities for leadership development
  • Programs focused on wellness and fostering a sense of community

Student Goals

By participating in a learning community, a JSSOM medical student will be able to:

  • Develop meaningful connections with faculty, staff, and peers.
  • Identify career and elective advising, and academic support resources to set actionable goals based on medical and personal interests.
  • Enhance clinical skills and professional development through formative feedback and application in simulated and real-world situations.
  • Engage with programs and events that promote well-being, balance, and financial wellness.
  • Use reflective practice to enhance self-awareness, resilience, and identify opportunities to address challenges (Growth Mindset).

The LC Eight

Each LC (8 in total) includes a cohort of students from all four years (MS1–MS4), intentionally designed to foster meaningful mentorship, continuity of support, and connection. This vertical structure allows students to learn not only from dedicated faculty, but also from peer mentors who are often just one step ahead in their training, creating a culture of shared wisdom and support. Each LC is proudly identified by a Galveston street name, chosen through a vote by its student members to celebrate the island's rich history while creating a unique identity and a sense of pride. Students are assigned to a LC through their Doctoring and Clinical Skills (DoCS) group, providing a consistent network of faculty assisting with clinical skills development. Every LC is anchored to the academic environment by a dedicated community space designed host wellness and professional development activities, studying with classmates, and meeting with faculty or peer mentors. These welcoming spaces serve as a home away from home, strengthening relationships and cultivating the sense of belonging that is essential to success at the John Sealy School of Medicine.

Learning Community Triads

Every Learning Community is supported by a dedicated TRIAD consisting of Learning Community Faculty, an Office of Student Affairs and Admissions (OSAA) Dean, and an Academic Support and Career Counseling (ASCC) Learning Specialist. Together, they serve as each student's “first stop” for questions, concerns, celebrations, or support throughout medical school. By combining expertise in career and elective advising, academic success, wellness, and student support services, the TRIAD provides personalized guidance, connects students with resources, and fosters the relationships that help them thrive from orientation through residency preparedness.

Clinical Skills Development

Our Learning Community faculty support students throughout every phase of the curriculum, helping them develop and strengthen the clinical skills needed to become confident, compassionate physicians. In addition to serving as facilitators in the Doctoring and Clinical Skills (DoCS) curriculum, faculty design and facilitate co-curricular activities that provide students with additional opportunities to practice, refine, and apply their clinical skills.

Career and Elective Advising

Learning Community faculty provide longitudinal Career and Elective Advising helping students explore their interests, identify potential specialties, build their network, and make informed decisions about their medical education and future careers. As students progress through medical school, faculty offer individualized guidance to ensure students are prepared for their future careers in medicine.

Academic Support and Faculty Mentorship

Learning Communities provide a trusted source of academic support and mentorship. Students seeking additional opportunities to reinforce their learning or work through academic challenges can connect with faculty in a supportive, encouraging environment. Our goal is to normalize asking for help, build confidence, and equip students with the skills and strategies they need to achieve academic success, from faculty who understand the rigor and realities of being a medical student.

The Student Affairs Wellness Curriculum

The JSSOM Student Affairs Wellness Curriculum, grounded in the Future Physicians Holistic Growth & Development Model, is a longitudinal, Learning Community-based approach to supporting the whole student throughout medical school. Through five interconnected areas (Well-Being, Service, Transformational Leadership, Play, and Reflective Practice), students are encouraged to grow personally and professionally, build meaningful connections, and develop the skills and habits needed to thrive in medical school and beyond.

Wellness is at the heart of theLearning Community experience. Through events such as Well(ness) Stations, LC Peer Mentors help foster a sense of community by creating engaging experiences centered around the five areas of the Wellness Curriculum.
