adj_Thaker_HarshThe Department of Pathology at UTMB proudly upholds a long-standing tradition of excellence in diagnostic medicine, education, research, and innovation. For more than a century, the department has played a central role in advancing health through expert pathology services, pioneering discoveries, and the training of medical and scientific professionals. Working in close partnership with clinical and academic units across UTMB, the department contributes meaningfully to all mission areas of the institution.

Unparalleled Clinical Service
Our clinical operations encompass the full spectrum of pathology, with nationally recognized strengths in both anatomic and clinical services. Surgical pathology and cytopathology are defined by diagnostic precision, subspecialty expertise, and collaborative consultations - serving as essential partners to UTMB’s clinical teams. Our autopsy service is among the most highly regarded in the country, offering comprehensive evaluations that support family counseling, education, and quality improvement. UTMB was one of the first academic centers in the nation to implement fully digital pathology and to integrate artificial intelligence for cancer detection and case triage. In clinical pathology, we are leaders in diagnostic stewardship, delivering integrated, clinically relevant interpretations of laboratory tests. Our Diagnostic Management Teams align laboratory and clinical expertise to ensure appropriate test utilization and timely, actionable results.

Education Across the Continuum
UTMB Pathology is deeply committed to education at every level. The department trains residents and fellows through robust ACGME-accredited programs and offers immersive learning experiences for medical students, graduate students, and laboratory science trainees. Our curricula emphasize critical thinking, consultative communication, and the real-time application of knowledge in clinical and research settings. Faculty mentorship and interprofessional collaboration prepare graduates to lead in academic, clinical, and public health roles around the world.

Leadership in Research
The department’s research portfolio is anchored by internationally recognized programs in infectious diseases, host-pathogen interactions, and biodefense, supported by UTMB’s world-class BSL-3 and BSL-4 laboratory infrastructure. Faculty also lead innovative research in liver and metabolic disease, molecular diagnostics, and environmental pathology. Collaborations with the Galveston National Laboratory, Sealy Institute for Vaccine Sciences, and other UTMB centers extend the department’s impact on global health and scientific discovery.

Driving Innovation Through Technology
Innovation is central to the department’s mission. As early adopters of digital pathology, UTMB Pathology continues to lead in applying AI-based tools to enhance diagnostic accuracy, efficiency, and education. Faculty actively contribute to the development and validation of technologies that are reshaping precision medicine. Integrated closely with UTMB’s Artificial Intelligence Center and academic enterprise, the department ensures that innovation in pathology translates into real-world improvements for patients and learners.

In summary, through its unwavering commitment to diagnostic excellence, education, research, and innovation, the Department of Pathology is a vital force for progress at UTMB. Grounded in a rich legacy and strengthened by advanced technologies and collaborative partnerships, the department is uniquely positioned to meet the demands of modern medicine. As healthcare continues to evolve, UTMB Pathology remains dedicated to delivering the highest standards in patient care, training, and scientific advancement—locally, nationally, and globally.
