Children's Health Service Adolescent Medicine

We offer comprehensive adolescent healthcare, including well visits, treatment of dermatologic and musculoskeletal conditions, management of chronic illnesses, and gynecologic care. Through a longstanding partnership, UTMB Adolescent Medicine specialists support the health of local youth through services provided at the Teen Health Center, Inc., which independently operates school-based clinics that serve Galveston youth and young adults ages 0-21.

School-Based Clinics

In 1985, a group of Galveston physicians came together to address the unique healthcare needs of adolescents in the community. Working with partners, including UTMB, they helped establish the Teen Health Center, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to providing accessible healthcare services to local youth. Today, UTMB and Teen Health Center continue their longstanding partnership to support the health and well-being of Galveston youth through school-based healthcare services. Teen Health Center independently operates its school-based clinics and programs while collaborating with UTMB to enhance access to quality care.

Dr. Richard Rupp, Professor of Pediatrics and Director of Adolescent Medicine at UTMB, serves as Teen Health Center's Medical Director. Teen Health Center's physician assistants provide services at the Sealy Teen Health Clinic at

Ball High School,
Central Middle School,
Weis Middle School,
Austin Elementary,
Moody Early Childhood Center, and
Crenshaw School of Environmental Studies in Bolivar.

Dr. Rupp is the Medical Director for Island Pedi East. This location provides both Primary Care and Specialty Care services to children and youth from birth through 21 years of age.

This clinic provides both Primary Care and Specialty Care services to children and youth from birth through 21 years of age. All services are provided in a family-centered setting with specialized education and support to optimize care and outcomes.
This clinic is a state-of-the-art facility. Faculty and resident pediatricians are present in this location, providing care for infants and children from the newborn period through adolescence. As in our other locations (Island Pediatrics East and West), there are opportunities for families to participate in clinical studies, including those for vaccines.
