The JSSOM Scholarship Fund has established a grant program to enable students to request up to $1000 for a variety of purposes, including but not limited to supplemental academic resources, funds for professional travel, and funds to conduct and/or disseminate
research. Proposals will be accepted on a rolling basis. Funding consideration will be based on a variety of factors including financial need, project merit, and availability of funds from alternative sources.
The grants are intended to provide financial assistance for needs above and beyond the normal cost of medical school. For example, many students are obtaining acceptances to meetings to present research. This is a big expense and frequently
not covered by a research mentor, department, or financial aid package. In contrast, the grants are not intended to cover the cost of expenses such as food, gas, rent, or fees for step exams or residency applications. I am sympathetic to these considerable
expenses, but most of these are already included in individual financial aid packages.
In regards to supplemental academic resources: unless you have already received an individual personal recommendation from a
learning specialist to purchase these types of resources, please do not use the grant to apply. Please do not contact ASCC specifically to ask about getting support for an additional resource.
If you are applying for a grant to cover the cost of going to a meeting in order to present research, please include a communication from your mentor or department that they do not have the funds to support you.
If you have an emergency need for funds, the financial aid office does have the ability to help folks with emergency loans.
Thank you for your interest in the JSSOM Scholarship grant. There have been many worthy requests for funds, but unfortunately, we have expended all available funds for the time being. We anticipate being able to distribute funds later in the fall and will
provide updates on or around the beginning of October, 2023.
Please let us know if you have any questions.
