Mission
Advising Program
The Career Advising Program is committed to supporting students in achieving their career goals through advising, discipline specific mentorship, coaching, and providing resources and experiences. We aim to establish authentic connections between faculty and students that inspire students to thrive as they grow into their values, voice, and purpose in medicine and in life.
Each
student is assigned a Faculty Career Advisor throughout all four years
at UTMB. We also offer several resources, advice panels hosted by
upperclassman, residents and faculty as well as informational sessions.
In addition, Assistant Deans are available to meet with during the year
at any time.
As a first-year medical student, your Faculty Career Advisor will assist
you in identifying your interests, values, personality and skills for
the purpose of narrowing down a career specialty you are interested in
pursuing. Road 2 Residency Lunch & Learn sessions are held throughout the year.
As a second-year medical student, your Faculty Career Advisor will meet with you to help you to solidify
your interests and build your experience to deepen your understanding
of practicing medicine within the specialties you are considering. Road 2 Residency Lunch & Learn sessions are held throughout the year.
As
a third-year medical student, you will attend a Match Kick-off,
complete a "Match Scorecard" and your advisor will advise you and help
you to successfully enter the residency match competitively in the following year.
As
a fourth-year medical student, you will complete Mock Interviews,
receive feedback on your personal statement, receive counseling and
advice during interview season and help you through your rank list so
that you will match into your preferred specialty of choice!
