Clinical Fellowship in Allergy and Immunology

The Clinical Fellowship in Allergy and Immunology is an ACGME-accredited training program (Program number 020-48-11-026) that fulfills the requirements of the American Board of Allergy and Immunology (ABAI) to produce superb clinicians/scientists. This is a joint program of the Departments of Internal Medicine and Pediatrics at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB).
During the 2 year program, fellows alternate between clinical and research years. The clinical year consists of 7 half days of clinic per week. Fellows provide care at several outpatient clinic locations in Galveston county, with a majority being in League City, TX. During the research year, a fellow will typically be in the clinic 3 half days per week with the remainder of time devoted to the pursuit of scholarly activities. Fellows take primary call about 14 weeks out of the clinical year. While on call, fellows will actively work on our inpatient consult service which sees a variety of patients with allergic and immunologic conditions. While on service, fellows will have the opportunity to perform a variety of procedures, including medication challenges and desensitization. Research fellows take primary call about 3 to 4 weeks per year. The allergy and immunology fellowship program hosts 1 half-day of protected time for didactics (Thursday afternoons) which includes board review and journal club. Didactics sessions are attended by faculty, fellows, and other learners.
Our fellows have undertaken a variety of research pursuits over the course of their fellowship. We encourage fellows to work closely with faculty early in the course of their fellowship to develop a research project and timeline for execution. Recent fellows have worked on a variety of topics and disease states including, chronic urticaria, acquired angioedema, pediatric/adult asthma, and immune dysregulation.
Beyond these factors, we work very hard to cultivate a tight-knit sense of community amongst our fellows and faculty. We like to think of our division as a small family within a much bigger system. Our graduates have pursued a variety of career paths, both in academic medicine and private practice, locally and nationally.
